DYI to Save Energy Consumption

Do It Yourself

It is gogreenTX’s mission to help reduce consumption and carbon foorprints of homeowners. Here are a few things that the general public can do on their own to reduce energy costs and consumption.

  • Replace old light bulbs with LED light bulbs. Approximately $1 per bulb per month will be saved.
  • Install a progammable thermostat. While at work, 10 degrees lower saves approximately 10% on your monthly bill.
  • Up to 20% of your electric bill is due to your refridgerator. Set your refridgerator at 40% and your freezer at 5 degrees. Freezers do not need to be below zero. Food will get freezer burn at  sub-zero temperatures and ice cream should not be hard to scoop. This will optimize energy savings and your food savings.
  • Water heaters come set from the manufacturer at 140 degrees. By reducing to it 120 degrees, you can save approximately $10 per month.
  • Insulate outlets with foam insulators and plastic plugs (the child safety plugs).
  • Turn on a fan to help circulate the heat or cold, depending on the season.
  • Garage door insulator can be installed in a few minutes minutes.
  • Change wheather stripping on doors.
  • Insulate water lines on water heaters.
  • Install low-flow faucets and shower heads.
  • Change HVAC filters monthly.
  • Check for obstructed returns.
  • Fill in leaks with caulk around windows.
  • Ceiling fans counter clockwise in summer, clockwise (slow) in winter.
  • Switch thermostat to “auto” instead of on.
  • Close blinds or drapes to block the sun.
  • Make sure fireplace is sealed properly.
  • Make sure dryer exhaust is free flowing.
  • Don’t over dry your clothes.
  • Wash clothes in cold water.
